Reading Response - Swells

At first, A. R. Ammons’ effort seems to reek of nostalgia or merely a description of lofty places which, by themselves, are described elegantly enough. The conflict is saved until nearly the end, when the author evokes the reason behind the infliction of wonder for the previous seven stanzas. In the final stanza of the poem, we discover that the author is struggling to exist in a chaotic world, and seeks solace in the places being described. Additionally, the poem structurally resembled a series of waves, which worked very well with the language to create the ocean experience. I didn’t see any significant rhyming pattern, except possibly some slant rhyme at the end of the second stanza. This could have been intentional, but if so, I think I missed the significance.
